Sneak Preview: Michelle (AKA, Lady Scarlet)

I recently had the pleasure of shooting the lovely Michelle Daugherty (Model Mayhem #463647) at the palatial studio estate. I’d been trying to set this shoot up for some time but our schedules never meshed until now and it was well worth the wait. It seems as though the plus-size genre is turning into a niche for me. I know couldn’t be happier with how this session in particular turned out.

Thank you, Michelle, for taking the time brighten up the studio. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to work together again.

Modern Cleopatra: Glamor & Mystery

In my last post I revealed the dream team behind the scenes.  Now, I’m proud to unveil what all the hard work and fun produced.  This collage features just a sample of the final set of images of which I, personally, was very happy to present to Alvita.

Elizabeth C. Kincaid as Cleopatra

Thanks again go out to everyone involved:

Alvita Lozano-Frankie of Freestyle in Detroit (concept & design)
Cheryl Salinas-Tucker of Rouge Makeup & Nail Studio (makeup)
Jennifer Vermeersch of Jennifer Vermeersch Jewelry (umm… jewelry)
Hair styling by James Merlo

…and, of course, the star of the day, Elizabeth C. Kincaid of Elizabeth’s Minaudieres (formerly the Tribute Box Collection) for supplying both the beauty and the accessories.

Bonus! Elizabeth is also the cover subject in the latest edition BLAC Detroit Magazine, discussing the bi-racial experience in the Age of Obama (photography by Shawn Lee). Be sure to check that out!

Modern Day Cleopatra

Alvita Lozano-Frankie of FreeStyle Detroit asked me to help out with a promotional shoot she was putting together.  There are number of products on display here; makeup by Cheryl Salinas-Tucker of Rouge Makeup & Nails Studio in Ferndale, hair by James Merlo, jewelry by Jennifer Vermeersch Jewelry of Ferndale, and the handbag and modeling by Elizabeth C. Kincaid of Elizabeth’s Minaudieres (formerly the Tribute Box Collection).

The shoot took place at Rouge, right on Woodward Avenue, and our hosts Cheryl and Jennifer were gracious, fun and had the coolest music mix possible going in the background.  There’s nothing like good music to get the creative juices flowing, not just for the photographer but everyone involved, from the stylists to the models, as I hope this image shows.

Modern Day Cleopatra

And, of course, a tip of the cap to our Dream Team…

Our behind-the-scenes Dream Team

Thanks go out to Alvita and the whole team for a great evening of shooting.  I’m looking forward to working with you all again in the near future.  Be on the lookout for updates from this shoot in the next day or two.

Exposure.Detroit’s January Show, featuring Woodward Avenue

Woodward Avenue: Mile by Mile, Exposure.Detroit’s next big photo exhibit, will feature the work of a 52 local photographers.  The aim of this ambitious project to document each and every mile of Woodward Avenue, from Campus Martius downtown through the loop in Pontiac North of M-59.  Each photog was assigned a 1-mile stretch of Woodward, either the northbound or southbound side, and tasked with finding 1 image that captures the essence of that zone.   Woodward Avenue runs roughly 26 miles in total.  Multiply to by 2 side of the road and that give you your 52 presenting photogs.

I’m proud to be included in this project and look forward to presenting my work alongside this large and talented group.  The Bean & Leaf Cafe has been a staunch support of E.D and all of it’s artists for several years now.  Please come out and support them and great community of artists and art lovers.  You can RSVP here.  I’ll see you there!

Plus Size Pin-up!

The return of Ms. Jess: Jessica contacted me about doing another shoot a while back.  We got together in the palatial studio and improvised on some vintage styled pin-up shots.  We were going for a kind of Betty Paige meets the WPA and somewhere in between.  I’m pretty happy with how things turned out.   This collage is pretty good summary of the session.

Jessica Laine

As usual, Jessica is a lot of fun to work with,  very comfortable in her own skin and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her.  Thanks again for a great session, Jessica!

Glass Menagerie: The Art of April Wagner

April Wagner breathes life into glass to create things of beauty.  Through her company, Epiphany Studios in Pontiac, Michigan (also on Facebook), she creates a variety of fine art glass sculptures and other items.   Last November April saw my presentation for the Detroit Pecha-Kucha Night, Volume 6 at the Detroit Film Theatre in the DIA (Detroit Institute of Art) .   Shortly thereafter she friended me on Facebook, “liked” my business page and, just recently, contacted me about photographing a piece of her work, the very modern, avant garde chandelier pictured below.

I was happy to get the assignment because I hadn’t taken the opportunity to do this kind of shooting in a long while.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, stepping outside of portrait and fashion/glamour groove I’ve been in, but I knew this would be a good exercise for me if nothing else.  Besides, April seemed like crazy cool people and she complimented my photography.  Winner.

This is quick summary of what I was able to capture that day.   I’m happy with how it turned out.  I decided to leave the flash in the bag for this one and break out the tripod instead to let the natural light and glow from the lamps carry the day.
