Spirit of the Moment’s 2012 Pamper Party Extravaganza!

I am very pleased to announce that I will be one of many talented vendors on hand to ply my photographic wares at the 2012 Pamper Party Extravaganza hosted by Spirit of the Moment Praise Dance Ministry.  Last year’s event was a big success, attracting over 300 guests as they were pampered, made over and fussed over by their choice of stylists, make-up artists and other health and beauty professionals, including the event’s hostess, the one and only Eonet Brown.

It all takes place from 1 -6PM, Saturday, February 4th  at the Northwest Activity Center in Detroit.

For Valentine’s Day: Fall In Love With Fashion!

I am very pleased to announce that this coming Valentine’s Day an exclusive, one-night-only exhibition of my work, along with that of several other great local artists, will take place in Ferndale, MI.  “Fall In Love With Fashion”, curated by Alvita Lozano-Frankie of FreeStyle in Detroit, is “an exploratory fashion / art gallery concept highlighting photography, fine art, costume, millinery and digital media.  Everything happens at Salon Rehe in Ferdale, MI at 6pm.

Coney Detroit: Forthcoming book features history and photography of local icons

"Coney Detroit" by Joe Grimm & KatherineYungI’m very proud to have some of my work included in the forthcoming release from Wayne State University Press, Coney Detroit by Joe Grimm (formerly of the Detroit Free Press) and Katherine Yung.  The book, which has been given an impressive review on MLive this week, features the rich and largely untold history of Detroit’s Coney Island tradition as well as the work of many great local photographers, including myself.

Coney-lovers can sink their teeth into the first book exploring the history, personalities and passion behind Detroit’s most famous food export. 

Coney Detroit is a new book authored by Joe Grimm (formerly of the Detroit Free Press) and Katherine Yung. Over 150 color photographs help tell the story of the Coney’s rise, from the suppliers to restaurant owners to variations on the dish (ever had a Coney pizza?).

Falcon Quinceañera Celebration!

In my opinion, the greatest compliment a photographer can receive is to be contracted for work by a fellow photographer, especially a good one.  I recently had such an experience when fellow Exposure.Detroit member, Luis LS, recommended me to document the Quinceañera of his goddaughter, Andrea Falcon, and I couldn’t have been happier to receive the call.  Andrea and her parents were very sweet people, a pleasure to work for and it was a great event all-around.

For the unitiated, a Quinceañera, also known as a Fiesta de Quinceañera, or quince, is the celebration of a young woman’s fifteenth birthday in Latin America communities.  This birthday is celebrated in a manner similar to the Bat Mitzvah in Jewish tradition, as it marks the transition to womanhood.

“Paper Dolls” by Matt Richmond

My good friend, Alvita Lozano-Frankie of Freestyle in Detroit, invited me to the opening of Matt Richmond’s “Paper Dolls” exhibit at the Valentine Vodka Co. in Ferndale and I’m glad she did. Matt’s art is a unique experience that is positively made to be photographed. It consists of live exhibits featuring models dressed in stylish clothing made completely of paper. You can’t really tell in these picture but the place was hopping all night. I had to pull people aside to get these shots. Great event.

Re:Focus! A Gallery Event

I’m pleased to announce that a sample of my work will be on display at the 71 Garfield Gallery in midtown Detroit.  The grand opening of “RE:FOCUS DETROIT” is scheduled for Friday, July 29th @ 7pm ~ 10pm and will feature 40 pieces from 31 of the best up-and-coming photographers in the area presenting work that reflects the beautiful and positive side of our home, the Motor City.  As usual this event was made possible the good people at Exposure.Detroit (Flickr | Facebook) and, of course, the staff and management of the 71 Garfield Gallery, who so graciously opened their space to us.

We’re back! Update on Updates

I’m rolling out a partial update to the site today. Not all of my planned visual updates are panning out the way I would have liked,while the behind-the-scenes changes I was most excited about have. So, rather than leave the site down any longer, I’ve decided it’s better to go with what I have so far.

 

Changes you’ll notice:

  • Upgraded portfolio gallery displays
  • New lightbox displays
  • Improved private proofing areas
  • Improved e-commerce with more options

More to come in future updates:

  • Improved homepage slideshows
  • Expanded portfolio galleries
  • More prints for sale
  • More online print ordering options

I’m really happy with the client proofing and e-commerce improvements.  I’ll be able do a lot more with these and posting large galleries with built-in e-commerce will, from now on, be a snap.  It’s all going to make for faster delivery and better service.  Please feel free to register your feedback on these changes in the comments  to this thread.

If you have any ideas you’d like to see implemented I’d love to hear them.

Sneak Preview: Michelle (AKA, Lady Scarlet)

I recently had the pleasure of shooting the lovely Michelle Daugherty (Model Mayhem #463647) at the palatial studio estate. I’d been trying to set this shoot up for some time but our schedules never meshed until now and it was well worth the wait. It seems as though the plus-size genre is turning into a niche for me. I know couldn’t be happier with how this session in particular turned out.

Thank you, Michelle, for taking the time brighten up the studio. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to work together again.
